Why Mindfulness Works

Mindfulness is often misunderstood as a tool for relaxation. In reality, it is a systematic and evidence-based method for training attention, increasing interoceptive awareness, and cultivating psychological flexibility. At its core, mindfulness involves the capacity to attend to present-moment experience with intentionality, openness, and kindness — without clinging to what is pleasant or resisting what is painful.

Over the past two decades, scientific research has increasingly confirmed what contemplative traditions have long maintained: cultivating mindful awareness can lead to measurable and meaningful changes in how we relate to pain, stress, and emotion.

MEET LOUIS

" I bring over a decade of lived and professional experience to my work in mindfulness and wellbeing. I trained as a mindfulness teacher with Breathworks, a leading mindfulness organisation rooted in the lived experience of chronic pain and illness, and I’m currently completing an MSc in Positive Psychology — exploring the science of resilience, meaning, and human flourishing.

My teaching is grounded in both contemplative tradition and contemporary science, blending the wisdom of embodied awareness with the rigour of evidence-based practice. I specialise in supporting people navigating stress, chronic health conditions, caregiving responsibilities, and emotional overwhelm — and I hold space in a way that is both psychologically informed and deeply human.

Alongside my academic and professional training, my practice is shaped by my personal experience as a long-term carer for my two nephews. This journey has given me firsthand insight into what it means to show up with compassion — even on the hardest days — and has deepened my commitment to helping others meet their lives with presence, courage, and care.

My approach is trauma-sensitive, strengths-based, and always centred on the belief that each person already possesses the inner resources needed for transformation. Mindfulness isn’t about achieving perfection — it’s about coming home to the life you already have, with greater clarity and kindness.

If you're looking for grounded, warm, evidence-informed support, you’re in the right place. "

What Does This Mean For You?

Engaging in mindfulness practice is not merely about managing symptoms — it’s about fundamentally changing your relationship to experience. You’re not just learning how to "cope" with stress, anxiety, or illness. You’re learning how to create space between stimulus and response. You’re retraining your nervous system. You’re establishing new cognitive and emotional patterns that favour equanimity, presence, and resilience.

This is not a quick fix, nor is it an esoteric practice. It is a rigorously studied, teachable skill set — one that can be integrated into everyday life and that supports long-term wellbeing
